Aggressiveness and violence in the workplace experienced by healthcare workers, perpetrated by their patients and patients’ family members, is a phenomenon that has taken on a global dimension for health professionals. Prevalence data, as shown by recent studies published both internationally and within the Italian healthcare context, reflect the complexity and variability of this issue. The first part of the paper describes the nature of violence, the care settings where it most frequently occurs, and the socio-demographic and professional characteristics of the workers affected. The causes are explored in depth, along with risk factors and mediating, moderating, predictive and protective problem’s factors. Several theoretical models are then presented to provide different perspectives on the issue. Prevention and management strategies considered effective according to the literature are also described. A mixed-method (qualitative and quantitative) study was designed and conducted at an Health and Social Care Institution in the Veneto Region. A range of variables were collected from incident reportings submitted by staff members who had experienced aggression. The time period considered spans from June 1, 2022, to June 1, 2025. After calculating the frequency of assaults in relation to several quantitative variables, the focus of the research shifted to a thematic analysis conducted on a sample of 829 violent events. Patterns of prevention and management for both physical and verbal assaults were identified. A discussion of the findings, compared with the existing literature, serves as a critical analysis. Finally, potential implications and strategies are proposed to improve the impact of the phenomenon within the organization where the research was conducted.
