The present thesis aims to investigate and illustrate the relationship between art and the new opportunities offered by artificial intelligence and machines. The paper is designed to be accessible to both an audience of specialists and non-expert readers on the subject, providing in the first chapter a general historical framework accompanied by a quick explanation on the functioning of AI, with a focus on terminology and learning processes such as machine learning and deep learning. The second and third chapters instead delve into the relationship with the art world, retracing the first examples of machines capable of creating artistic works, the transformations introduced by Computer Art and the information revolution, up to the present day. The work and research of contemporary artists operating through generative systems and algorithmic programs will be examined, in order to demonstrate the versatility and heterogeneity of the results obtainable using these means. In the fourth chapter, it exposes the challenges posed by the digital artistic product, the problems of conservation and maintenance, as well as usability of the works in relation to technological evolution and obsolescence. The question of authorship and copyright applied to works created without human intervention is also investigated, as are the ethical implications and problems at the political and economic level of the lack of suitable and unitary legislation at the global level. The last chapter concludes the research around the interaction between art and artificial intelligence by investigating the role of Blockchain and NFTs, as well as the ways of commercializing born digital works.
