Speculum principis, vices et vertus : examen de deux traductions du Baptistes sive calumnia de George Buchanan.

The concepts of virtue and vice, particularly as binary concepts, often feature in literary works belonging to the speculum principis genre. This thesis aims to examine how they are presented in two translations of Baptistes sive calumnia by George Buchanan: Baptistes, a version written in French verse by Roland Brisset (1590) and an English-language version written by A. Gordon Mitchell and published in 1904. In addition, the thesis will provide historical context for Buchanan’s original work, as well as the history of its publication, and delve into the context surrounding the two translations.
