La negazione in bergamasco

The work studies the negation patterns in a variety of Bergamasque - an Eastern Lombard dialect - from the village of Terno d'Isola (BG). The thesis relies on the data retrieved from five different questionnaires administred by the author to 38 native speakers. The focus of these questionnaires (three of translation task, two of grammaticality judgment task) is to comprehend how the negation, in some of its different sides, works in this variety that has not been studied much. Through the data, we will see how negation behaves in this variety according to different nuances: negative agreement, sentence negator, presuppositional negator, position and agreement between negator and (negative) adverbs. All this data will be examined in light of several studies of formal syntax, including those by Zeijlstra (2004, 2008, 2022); Déprez (1997, 2000, 2011); Manzini and Pescarini (2024) with regard to negative agreement; Cinque (1976); Penello and Pescarini (2008) with regard to presuppositional negation; Cinque (1999) and Zanuttini (1997) with regard to the position of the negator and the agreement between negator and adverbs. Il lavoro riguarda lo studio della negazione nel bergamasco di Terno d'Isola un dialetto del lombardo orientale. La tesi si basa sui dati raccolti da cinque diversi questionari somministrati dall'autore a 38 parlanti nativi. L'obiettivo di questi questionari (tre relativi a compiti di traduzione, due relativi a compiti di giudizio di grammaticalità) è comprendere come la negazione, in alcuni dei suoi diversi aspetti, funzioni. Attraverso i dati vedremo come si comporta la negazione in questa varietà secondo diverse sfumature: concordanza negativa, negatore di frase, negatore presupposizionale, posizione e accordo tra negatore e avverbi (negativi).
