Il motivo dell’anello nelle letterature romanze medievali. Un gioiello per una moltitudine di simboli

This study aims to explore the motif of the ring in medieval Romance literature, particularly among authors who lived between the 11th and 13th centuries. This small object, so widespread in our culture and already a symbol of bonds, alliances, and power, is imbued with these same meanings or magical powers in the texts studied with an extraordinary intensity that transforms it into a sort of vital presence within the stories. Our journey begins with a reflection on the mythical background that precedes and may have inspired medieval literature, from classical to Celtic or even Nordic myths. It continues by investigating the uses and traditions associated with rings in European society of those centuries, then reaches the heart of our work, which consists of collecting and studying literary works in which this symbolic object appears. It represents self-giving, strong bonds, in a dimension that can be defined as sacred. Sometimes it creates connections between the natural and the supernatural, allows the bearer to harness extraordinary powers, and can bring protection or captivity. In the most diverse episodes, the presence of this little gem always awakens a feeling of mystery, depth, and sacredness in readers of all times.

Questo studio si propone di indagare il motivo dell’anello nelle letterature romanze medievali, in particolare negli autori vissuti tra l’XI e il XIII secolo. Questo piccolo oggetto, tanto diffuso nella nostra cultura, che già si fa simbolo di legami, alleanze e potere, nei testi studiati si riveste di questi stessi significati o di poteri magici con un’intensità straordinaria che lo trasforma in una sorta di presenza vitale all’interno delle storie. Il nostro viaggio inizia con una riflessione sul retroscena mitico che precede e può aver ispirato i medievali, dai miti classici, ai celtici o anche nordici. Prosegue indagando gli usi e le tradizioni legate agli anelli nella società europea di quei secoli, poi giunge al cuore del nostro lavoro che consiste nella raccolta e studio delle opere letterarie in cui compare questo oggetto-simbolo. Rappresenta il dono di sé, forti legami, in una dimensione che può definirsi sacra. Talvolta crea connessioni tra naturale e soprannaturale, permette al portatore di fare uso di straordinari poteri, può portare protezione o cattività. Negli episodi più diversi, la presenza di questo piccolo gioiello risveglia sempre un sentimento di mistero, di profondità, di sacralità nei lettori di tutti i tempi.
