This thesis analyses the concept of “mestizaje”, its meaning and consequences that are represented in art through the so-called “casta paintings”. The work focuses on the masterpiece Comentarios reales de los Incas by Garcilaso De La Vega, in which the concept of mestizaje is applied to the colonisation period in Latin America, emblematic example of this process. The project concludes with a comparison with the present day, since the colonisation is just one of the possible conjugations of these phenomenon which in reality refers to everyone.
