This thesis analyses the dynamics of alterity that emerged during Byzantine Emperor Manuel II Palaeologus's journey through Western Europe (1399–1403). The first part of the study looks at the events between the Byzantine rebellion against Sultan Bayezid I and the Crusade of Nicopolis. The second, more extensive part reconstructs the emperor’s diplomatic mission through a stage-by-stage analysis of his travels in Europe. Employing an interdisciplinary approach and drawing on the methods of conceptual history, the research not only seeks to reconstruct historical events, but also to highlight representations of the 'other' and the underlying cultural dynamics. The aim is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the intercultural relations between the East and the West in the period leading up to the fall of the Byzantine Empire.

Abstract
The aim is to contribute to a deeper understanding of the intercultural relations between the East and the West in the period leading up to the fall of the Byzantine Empire.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
