The purpose of this paper is to present and discuss the effects of ice on aircraft wings, as well as to present the mitigating measures adopted by the aviation industry to prevent or eliminate its accumulation, ensuring the safety of flight operations even in adverse weather conditions. The first section will briefly present the mechanism behind ice formation, followed by a description of the different types of ice that can be encountered in flight. After a detailed analysis of the aerodynamic performance losses caused by these types of ice, the main systems introduced by the industry to mitigate the problem, both on the ground and in flight, will be presented. Finally, there will be a case study on an aircraft accident that occurred in Brazil in 2024, in which ice played a key role. Translated with DeepL.com (free version)

Abstract
Translated with DeepL.com (free version)| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
