Introduction Planas tracks represent an orthopedic–functional device used within the framework of neuro-occlusal rehabilitation of the stomatognathic system, aimed at guiding and rebalancing masticatory, swallowing, and postural functions. Their application in pediatric dentistry is particularly relevant, as it allows early intervention on altered functional patterns, promoting harmonious development of the skeletal bases and dental arches through the controlled stimulation of occlusal contacts and neuromuscular activity. This approach is especially significant in light of the high prevalence of malocclusions in pediatric populations, documented both worldwide and in Italy. Numerous epidemiological studies report that a substantial proportion of children already present occlusal alterations in primary and mixed dentition, with a tendency for malocclusions to persist or worsen during growth if appropriate interceptive strategies are not adopted. In Italy, surveys conducted on preschool and school-aged populations have shown a high need for early orthodontic treatment, with a significant presence of potentially progressive functional malocclusions. Materials and Methods The present work consists of a narrative review of the literature. The search for articles was conducted through consultation of the main scientific databases: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, and Google Scholar. Results This thesis therefore aims to analyze Planas tracks from a theoretical, physiological, and clinical perspective, exploring their mechanisms of action, therapeutic indications, and clinical outcomes in pediatric patients. Through a critical review of the scientific literature, it was possible to evaluate the effectiveness of this method in the treatment of early occlusal dysfunctions and in reducing the risk of progression toward more severe skeletal malocclusions, thus contributing to a preventive and function-oriented management of occlusal development in children. Conclusion The pediatric dentist plays a fundamental role in the early diagnosis of occlusal dysfunctions, in the evaluation of functional and environmental etiological factors, and in the identification of patients at risk of unfavorable occlusal development. Through periodic follow-up and a comprehensive assessment of craniofacial growth, the clinician can promptly intercept functional alterations and direct the patient toward active monitoring or targeted interceptive treatment, such as Planas tracks, with the aim of preventing the development of more complex skeletal malocclusions.
Indroduzione Le piste di Planas rappresentano un dispositivo ortopedico-funzionale impiegato nell’ambito della riabilitazione neuro-occlusale del sistema stomatognatico, finalizzato alla guida e al riequilibrio delle funzioni masticatorie, di deglutizione e posturali. La loro applicazione in odontoiatria pediatrica riveste particolare rilevanza, in quanto consente di intervenire precocemente sui pattern funzionali alterati, favorendo uno sviluppo armonico delle basi ossee e delle arcate dentarie attraverso la stimolazione controllata dei contatti occlusali e dell’attività neuromuscolare. Tale approccio risulta particolarmente significativo alla luce dell’elevata prevalenza delle malocclusioni in età pediatrica, documentata sia a livello mondiale sia nel contesto italiano. Numerosi studi epidemiologici riportano che una quota rilevante di bambini presenta alterazioni occlusali già in dentizione decidua e mista, con una tendenza alla persistenza o al peggioramento delle malocclusioni nel corso della crescita, qualora non vengano adottate strategie intercettive adeguate. In Italia, indagini condotte su popolazioni scolastiche e prescolari hanno evidenziato un’elevata necessità di trattamento ortodontico precoce, con una significativa presenza di malocclusioni funzionali potenzialmente evolutive. Materiali e metodi Il presente elaborato consiste in una revisione narrativa della letteratura. La ricerca degli articoli è stata condotta mediante consultazione delle principali banche dati scientifiche: PubMed/MEDLINE, Scopus, Google Scholar. Risultati La presente tesi si propone pertanto di analizzare le piste di Planas da un punto di vista teorico, fisiologico e clinico, approfondendone i principi di funzionamento, le indicazioni terapeutiche e i risultati ottenibili in ambito pediatrico. Tramite la revisione critica della letteratura scientifica, si è potuto valutare l’efficacia della metodica nel trattamento delle disfunzioni occlusali precoci e nel ridurre il rischio di evoluzione verso malocclusioni scheletriche più severe, contribuendo così a una gestione preventiva e funzionalmente orientata dello sviluppo occlusale del bambino. Conclusione L’odontoiatra pediatrico riveste un ruolo fondamentale nella diagnosi precoce delle disfunzioni occlusali, nella valutazione dei fattori eziologici funzionali e ambientali e nell’individuazione dei pazienti a rischio evolutivo. Attraverso controlli periodici e una valutazione globale dello sviluppo cranio-facciale, il professionista può intercettare tempestivamente le alterazioni funzionali, indirizzando il paziente verso un monitoraggio attivo o un trattamento intercettivo mirato, come le piste di Plans, con l’obiettivo di prevenire l’instaurarsi di malocclusioni scheletriche più complesse.
