What used to be taken as the pride of the nation and airline excellence, Pakistan International Airlines (PIA) has undergone a tremendous change throughout the decades. PIA was founded in 1955 and initially became one of the best airlines in Asia that was recognized across the globe because of its innovation, quality service, and efficient working performance. But with time the airline evolved slowly but certainly in an overall negative way as there was managerial inefficiencies, financial mismanagement, political interference, age old infrastructure and the rising competition among the international aviation industry. This thesis will provide a detailed historical overview of the emergence of PIA and its downfall as well as the current business issues it faces. It discusses the history, history, success factors of the airline, analyzes the most crucial strategic and operational choices that led to its decline and the economic, political and organizational problems that influence airline performance. It is also a research on various external forces like liberalization of the market, competition of the business sector, technology changes, and evolving consumer expectations. This study will determine the fundamental causes of the performance trend at PIA by examining their financial records, changes in leadership and changes in their policies. Moreover, the thesis refers to the possible organizational restructuring, services enhancement, and business recovery sustainability strategies. The results aim at promoting the academic literature on the management of state owned enterprises and offer practical suggestions on how policymakers and stakeholders in the aviation industry can make the management of PIA more viable in the long term.
