The linen textile, named after “Beata Benvenuta Boiani”, and conserved today at the Christian Museum in Cividale del Friuli, is a rare example of an exceptionally preserved medieval textile handwork with a high-quality embroidered decoration. It presents a series of problems, which include: its precise dating, the circumstances of its production, its original placement in the San Domenico convent, and, most importantly, its function and use. These issues make the “Velo” a case study of particular interest, limited by the lack of archival traces or documents. Despite this, the objective of this thesis is to attempt to answer some of these questions, or, whenever that was not possible, to suggest some hypothesis of interpretation to provide further tools for the study and research of this artefact, through the analysis of archival sources, some unpublished as well. Therefore, the votive and liturgic functions of the “Velo” emerge, highlighting the fact that it was considered the only existing relic linked to the Beata, and that it was used to cure illnesses and to aid pregnant women during childbirth.

Abstract
Therefore, the votive and liturgic functions of the “Velo” emerge, highlighting the fact that it was considered the only existing relic linked to the Beata, and that it was used to cure illnesses and to aid pregnant women during childbirth.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
