This thesis examines the process through which the Vespa, originally conceived in the immediate postwar period as an affordable and functional means of transportation, gradually evolved into a cultural icon capable of transcending different fields, including industrial design, cinema, and the visual arts. The aim of the study is to investigate the dynamics that enabled a mass-produced object to acquire symbolic status and to become fully integrated into both the national and international collective imagination. The thesis demonstrates how the Vespa functioned not merely as a utilitarian object, but as a genuine cultural device, capable of conveying values of emancipation, freedom, and lifestyle.
La presente tesi analizza il processo attraverso il quale la Vespa, nata nel secondo dopoguerra come mezzo di trasporto economico e funzionale, si è progressivamente trasformata in un’icona culturale capace di attraversare ambiti diversi quali il design industriale, il cinema e le arti visive. L’obiettivo è indagare le dinamiche che hanno permesso a un prodotto di serie di acquisire uno statuto simbolico e di entrare a pieno titolo nell’immaginario collettivo nazionale e internazionale.La tesi mostra come la Vespa abbia operato non solo come oggetto funzionale, ma come vero e proprio dispositivo culturale, capace di veicolare valori di emancipazione, libertà e stile di vita.
