This thesis investigates the linguistic phenomenon of polysemy in terminology. First, we provide a literature review of the scholarly discussion on polysemy in terminology. In this phase, we emphasize the differences between early terminological approaches to polysemy and recent ones. We will see that they are very different and sometimes even contrasting. Then we conduct empirical terminological research on polysemy, choosing the English legal domain as subject field for our investigation. The specialized knowledge object of study is thus limited to common law countries only. After identifying some polysemous terms in the English legal language, we analyze them from a terminological perspective.
