In the context of the growing international diffusion of audiovisual products, translation represents a fundamental tool for linguistic and cultural mediation. This study analyses audiovisual translation with particular reference to subtitling, focusing on the difficulties associated with rendering cultural references and dialectal speech. After providing a theoretical framework for audiovisual translation and the main modes of transfer, the study explores the practice of subtitling in its theoretical and translational aspects, focusing on the strategies that can be adopted for the treatment of culturally marked elements. Particular attention is paid to the Calabrian dialect, understood as an expression of language, culture and identity, and to the issues related to its translation in the audiovisual field. The practical part of the thesis consists of the analysis and proposed English translation of a selection of segments from the documentary Incalabriamoci characterised by the use of the Calabrian dialect. The aim is to identify translation solutions that are capable of rendering, as far as possible, the language, culture and identity conveyed by the source text, taking into account the constraints and conventions of subtitling. The analysis highlights the necessary balance between fidelity to the original content and accessibility for the target audience.
