This thesis analyzes the use of nonsense in children's literature, particularly in the works of Edward Lear and Toti Scialoja. The first chapter traces the history of children's literature, focusing on the evolution of the relationship between text and images. The second chapter is dedicated to the nonsense genre, from its origins to its contemporary developments, representing it as a way of expressing oneself that plays with the logic and creativity of readers. The third chapter then focuses on Edward Lear, a very important author for Anglo-Saxon nonsense. His most famous texts are analyzed, where Lear uses irony and parody to mock the rules of language and storytelling. Lear will be compared with the Italian literary scene, in particular with Toti Scialoja, writer, critic, and screenwriter. An examination of his poems for children and adults shows how he reworks nonsense in a personal and creative way. In this way, nonsense becomes a tool for exploring new forms of expression and communication. It is not only a form of humorous and playful expression, but also a tool for offering a critical interpretation of reality.
