The objective of this dissertation is to analyze the role of British Free-Standing Companies, with a focus on the Rio Tinto Company Limited, in the economic, political, and cultural development of Spain between the 19th and 20th centuries. Through a historical and theoretical framework, it examines the impact of foreign direct investment on the host country, with particular attention to the mining sector and the region of Huelva. The study explores Spain as a key destination for foreign capital in the context of industrialization and political and legislative transformations. It investigates the internal structure of Rio Tinto Company Limited, its influence on local institutions, and its social consequences. Finally, the dissertation analyzes the company’s strategic evolution in response to global economic changes in the 20th century, highlighting its transition from a free-standing company to a multinational enterprise.
