This thesis offers a comparative analysis of two European oral poetic-musical traditions: Romanian cântece bătrânești and Scottish ballads. Combining historical-literary perspectives with thematic and formal approaches, the study highlights similarities and differences in the ways these compositions construct and transmit collective memory, communal identity, and ethical models. The investigation focuses on the narrative function of song, the figure of the hero (and anti-hero), the representation of conflict and violence, and the role of recurring motifs such as fate, revenge, the supernatural, and attachment to place. Particular attention is paid to the poetic and rhetorical strategies typical of orality—repetition, formulaic language, variation, and rhythm—as well as to the relationship between performance, transmission, and textual fixation. The comparison shows that, despite differing cultural and historical contexts, both traditions respond to analogous needs for preserving and reshaping the past, while developing distinct stylistic solutions and imaginaries. The thesis thus aims to highlight the specificity of Romanian literature in dialogue with Scottish balladry, contributing to a broader understanding of intercultural dynamics in premodern and modern Europe over the long term.

Abstract
The thesis thus aims to highlight the specificity of Romanian literature in dialogue with Scottish balladry, contributing to a broader understanding of intercultural dynamics in premodern and modern Europe over the long term.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
