The study focuses on the analysis of the role and meanings of silence in Shakespeare's play "The Tempest". The aim is to find out the meanings displayed by silent moments in the play. In order to achieve this goal, the first chapter of the thesis provides some background to the whole study, offering both a linguistic framework and an overview on the value of silence during the Elizabethan age. Secondly, the thesis describes the techniques through which Shakespeare includes silence in his works, offering some valuable examples from different plays. The main analysis is finally carried in the third and last chapter of the dissertation, where the Shakesperean play "The Tempest" is used as case study. The dialogues have been firstly selected based on the relevance for the study, and secondly they have been contextualized and defined based on the notions discussed in the previous chapters. One last section of the third chapter is dedicated to moments of silence which have been identified through the use of AI, including a conclusive discussion comparing the silences that can be detected only by a reader and the ones instead detected by the AI.
