The FDI phenomenon is not a new topic in the literature, and it has been studied for decades. However, the same literature concerning this phenomenon gave particular attention to large and well-established multinational companies and excluded almost completely the small and medium enterprises (or SMEs). However, in a very globalised world as the one we are living in, also SMEs are able to internationalise through FDI. The aim of this thesis is to study the phenomenon of FDI applied to Italian SMEs, particularly the ones located in the northern regions. Particularly, the final aim is to identify a possible relationship between possession of a foreign subsidiary and the performance in the year 2020 and the difference in performance from 2019 to 2020. The hypothesis is that possessing a foreign subsidiary should have acted as a pillow and reduced the impact of the Covid-19 epidemic on performance. In order to test for this hypothesis, data related to the Italian SMEs have been extracted and analysed. The AIDA dataset has been used for the extraction of such data. We will see that performance is negatively influenced by the FDI, and strongly related to the operating sector of the company. These two variables however are unable to explain the drop in performance occurred in the year 2020.

Abstract

SMEs internationalisation: do FDIs help to perform better?
