The study focuses on water collection and water management methods within the main oases of the Egyptian Western Desert during the Hellenistic and Roman ages; particular attention was paid to the structures known as qantas or foggara, underground tunnels with ventilation shafts that conveyed water to the fields. The information was gathered mainly from an archaeological perspective, drawing on surveys and excavations conducted in the Western Sahara desert. The caravn routes that connected the oases to each other and to the Nile Valley, and which were the one of the main means of sustenance for oases, were also examined.
