This thesis aims to analyze the processes of economic transformation that affected Europe between the early modern period and the initial phases of industrialization. The first chapter critically examines the concept of proto-industrialization, exploring its main interpretations and its concrete manifestations within the European context, with particular attention to the role of trade networks and international markets. The second chapter focuses on the European manufacturing landscape, analyzing the emergence of various productive sectors, including tanning, silk, wool, ceramics, goldsmithing, and glassmaking, as well as the metallurgical and iron and steel industries. In this context, particular attention is also given to the role of water as a source of energy and a factor of production, with specific reference to the operation of water-powered mills. The third chapter is dedicated to the paper industry and reconstructs its development at the European, national, and Venetian levels, starting from the origins of paper and its diffusion. The final chapter focuses on a specific case study: the paper mill of Dueville. The investigation begins with a historical reconstruction of the complex and of the production cycle of rag paper and straw paper, also drawing on a particularly significant oral source; it then develops through a comparison with some of the main museum institutions in the Italian paper sector and concludes with a reflection on the possible prospects for the contemporary enhancement of the site.
