I warscapes di Band of Brothers, tra fiction cinematografica e geografia militare

This dissertation aims to investigate the impact of landscape and microgeography on military tactical decisions during the Second World War, in the events that unfolded from June 6, 1944, to the capture of the Eagle's Nest. The aim is to demonstrate how tactical decisions were profoundly influenced by geomorphology and that geographic intelligence was a determining factor in the success of operations. Methodologically, we will proceed with a systematic comparison of different sources; the analysis proposes comparing the HBO television series Band of Brothers and Stephen Ambrose's book of the same name, with descriptions of the landings, German defensive positioning, and logistics, with topographical maps and battle reports, to demonstrate how landscape was a key non-human actor, capable of either supporting or hindering the European advance of Easy Company. (506th PIR, 101st Airborne Division) Using the TV series episodes as case studies, the paper geographically delineates the areas analyzed, developing arguments from historical, cinematographic, geomorphological, climatic, and vegetation perspectives, and analyzing weapon-terrain dynamics. A second set of considerations focuses on the GIS reconstruction of military, geomorphological, and movement maps to provide visual support for the arguments. Significant archival and research work on historical images and comparison with the film adaptations guides the reader into a deep immersion in the historical era explored, seeking to reveal the climatic, physical, and psychological implications.

La tesi intende indagare l'impatto del paesaggio e della microgeografia sulle scelte tattiche militari della seconda guerra mondiale, negli eventi che si susseguono dal 6 giugno del 1944 alla presa del nido dell'aquila. L’obiettivo è dimostrare come le scelte tattiche siano state profondamente influenzate dalla geomorfologia e che l’intelligenza geografica sia stata un fattore determinante per la buona riuscita delle operazioni. Come metodologia si procederà con il confronto sistematico tra fonti diverse; l’analisi propone di confrontare la serie televisiva HBO Band of Brothers e l'omonimo testo di Stephen Ambrose, con le descrizioni di sbarco, posizionamento difensivo tedesco e logistica con mappe topografiche e rapporti di battaglia, per dimostrare come il paesaggio sia stato attore non umano fondamentale, capace di assecondare o ostacolare l’avanzata europea Easy Company. (506° PIR, 101ª Divisione Aviotrasportata) Prendendo le puntate della serie tv come casi studio, l’elaborato circoscrive geograficamente le zone analizzate procedendo con le argomentazioni dal punto di vista storico, cinematografico, geomorfologico, climatico, vegetazionale e analizzando la dinamica arma-terreno. Un secondo assortimento di considerazioni si concentra sulla ricostruzione GIS delle mappe militari, geomorfologiche e di inquadramento degli spostamenti per fornire supporto visivo alle argomentazioni. Un importante lavoro archivistico e di ricerca sulle immagini storiche e il confronto con la trasposizione cinematografica guida il lettore a immergersi profondamente nell’epoca storica affrontata, cercando di rivelare a pelle le implicazioni climatiche, fisiche e psicologiche.
