In the Trentino valleys, forest management and timber harvesting, especially of spruce, are at the base of the alpine social and economic developement. Therefore, over time, considering the economic and social importance of this topic, various techniques of obtainable timber volumes estimation from a forest before harvesting have been developed, in order to predict its quantity and therefore its value. At the same time, various planning and programming tools have been introduced, in order to control and organize territorial wood harvesting, also applicating sustainability and protection concepts. However, in recent times, sawmill owners noticed that the net volumes ready for manufacturing were greater than the volumes estimated before the cut, which caused uncertainty and discrepancies. The aim of this study is to analyze the accuracy of used methods of measuring and estimating standing timber, to compare them with other estimation methods and to analyze the results with the measured log values, and, if possible, to identify errors. In order to do this, 10 different samples areas in Trentino were analyzed, where cuttings have been made, almost totally of norwey spruce. For each area, the heights of 30 remaining trees were measured, distributing them across the most commonly represented diameter classes. Then the hypsometric curve and the actual fertility index have been calculated, and compared with the ones declared in the management plans. From there, the estimation of the presumed timber was recalculated using the “tariffario trentino” method with the fertility index updated to the new hypsometric curve. This was then compared with the estimates declared in the cutting plans and with the actual timber volumes obtained from the cut and declared in the measurement reports. Furthermore, another recalculation using another estimation method, that is Tabacchi's norwey spruce double-entry tabel, has been calculated, in order to compare it with that obtained from the “tariffario trentino” method and the actual measured values, and determine which of the two is more accurate. Furthermore, during three trees marking procedures, the diameters were measured both above, like the conventional method actually used, and to the side of the plants, in order to understand whether the position from which the measure is taken influences the estimate.

Abstract

In the Trentino valleys, forest management and timber harvesting, especially of spruce, are at the base of the alpine social and economic developement. Therefore, over time, considering the economic and social importance of this topic, various techniques of obtainable timber volumes estimation from a forest before harvesting have been developed, in order to predict its quantity and therefore its value. At the same time, various planning and programming tools have been introduced, in order to control and organize territorial wood harvesting, also applicating sustainability and protection concepts. Analysis of discrepancies between the estimated volume of standing trees and the measure of logs in Trentino spruce forests
