According to the Italian technical standards "Linee Guida per la classificazione e gestione del rischio, la valutazione della sicurezza ed il monitoraggio dei ponti esistenti", Gerber saddles (dapped-end beams) are identified as one of the most vulnerable structural components within the national bridge heritage. This vulnerability is primarily due to the isostatic nature of the connection and degradation caused by corrosion, particularly affecting the corner reinforcement, which is exacerbated by the use of de-icing salts on viaduct decks. Consequently, the introduction of a product specifically designed for Gerber saddles to mitigate corrosion progression represents a timely technical and cost-effective solution, meeting the increasing demand for interventions on deteriorating structures. This thesis presents the development of an experimental procedure on scaled specimens to evaluate the effectiveness of an external sacrificial anode for Gerber saddles. The experimental program encompasses the design of reinforced concrete beams with Gerber saddles using the strut-and-tie method and the implementation of an accelerated artificial corrosion process on the reinforcement. The tests on scaled specimens are supplemented by preliminary tests on small-scale samples to calibrate the corrosion process and assess the mechanical parameters of the materials throughout the different phases of the program. The experimental analysis is supported by numerical models for the predictive estimation of the load-carrying capacity of the corroded specimens, based on validated literature models regarding the degradation of material mechanical properties.

Abstract
The experimental analysis is supported by numerical models for the predictive estimation of the load-carrying capacity of the corroded specimens, based on validated literature models regarding the degradation of material mechanical properties.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
