Sexual regret is a complex psychological phenomenon that has attracted increasing attention in recent years in both clinical and forensic contexts. One of the central issues concerns the way in which regret following a consensual sexual encounter—by definition ambiguous and potentially difficult to distinguish from other emotional experiences—may influence the processing and recollection of the event itself. The primary aim of the present study was to explore the relationship between individual personality differences and sexual regret, a topic that, despite its theoretical and practical relevance, has thus far received limited attention in the scientific literature. Specifically, this study sought to determine, through a self-administered questionnaire completed by a sample of 282 individuals aged 18 to 30 years, whether specific maladaptive personality dimensions could serve as significant predictors of an individual's tendency to experience high levels of sexual regret. The results partially support this hypothesis, suggesting that individuals who experience high levels of sexual regret tend to exhibit a profile characterized by greater emotional vulnerability, difficulties in relational engagement, increased impulsivity, and more eccentric or subjective cognitive styles. Furthermore, a qualitative analysis of the open-ended responses made it possible to identify recurring lexical patterns that were consistent with the emotional and psychological experience of regret. These findings highlight the importance of understanding and not underestimating the influence of personal variables, particularly within forensic settings. However, further research in this area is needed, as the existing literature on regret remains limited, and information specifically concerning sexual regret and its association with personality domains is even scarcer, if not entirely absent.

Abstract
However, further research in this area is needed, as the existing literature on regret remains limited, and information specifically concerning sexual regret and its association with personality domains is even scarcer, if not entirely absent.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
