Anxiety is associated with alterations in attentional processes and cognitive control, particularly in the presence of emotionally salient stimuli. The present study investigated the behavioral and neurophysiological correlates of anxiety in subclinical individuals, as well as the potential effects of neuromodulation through transcranial alternating current stimulation (tACS) during an Affective Flanker Task (AFT) and electroencephalographic (EEG) recording. The results revealed significant differences among anxiety groups in terms of accuracy and performance efficiency, as well as modulation of the N450 and P2a event-related potential (ERP) components associated with anxiety levels. Furthermore, active tACS stimulation produced a significant reduction in state anxiety and modulated the P2a component. Overall, these findings suggest that anxiety influences cognitive control and emotional processing mechanisms, highlighting the potential of tACS as a non-invasive neuromodulation tool.
L’ansia è associata ad alterazioni dei processi attentivi e di controllo cognitivo, specialmente in presenza di stimoli emotivamente salienti. Il presente studio indaga i correlati comportamentali e neurofisiologici dell’ansia in soggetti subclinici e i possibili effetti di una neuromodulazione con una stimolazione transcranica a corrente alternata (tACS) in un compito di Affective Flanker Task (AFT) e una registrazione elettroencefalografica (EEG). I risultati hanno evidenziato differenze significative tra i diversi gruppi nell’accuratezza e nell’efficienza di performance, oltra a riportare una modulazione delle componenti ERP N450 e P2a associate a livelli di ansia. Inoltre, la stimolazione tACS attiva ha prodotto una riduzione significativa dell’ansia di stato e una modulazione della componente P2a. Nel complesso i risultati suggeriscono che l’ansia influenzi i processi di controllo cognitivo e di elaborazione emotiva, evidenziando il potenziale della stimolazione tACS come strumento di neruomodulazione non invasivo.
