The thesis aims to analyze the deconstruction of “Destination Italy” in Ripley (Netflix, 2024) and the themes that derive from it. Providing an overview of the history of the United States television industry, the thesis analyzes the content strategy of Netflix, the distribution platform of the series, within the SVOD model, focusing on the industrial and production context of Ripley as a miniseries and its characteristics as Quality TV. Integrating the history of tourism in Italy from the perspective of international tourists and making reference to the concept of “Destination Italy”, the study focuses on its two identities: an idealized tourist space of leisure and aesthetics, and a hyperreal simulacrum to alleviate postmodern anxiety. Through the analysis of the narrative techniques with which Ripley guides the audiences to ally with the character of the antihero, the failure of the identity of “Destination Italy” as a space of leisure and aesthetics in the series is discussed. Finally, by analyzing the characterization of Tom’s quality of “nothing” in Ripley, it argues how the hyperreal Italy loses its own identity and its symbolic meaning within the narrative. Through this theme, Ripley expresses the challenge to the construction of the singularity of identity through consumer goods.
