Fra materia, immagine, e testo: un approccio interdisciplinare allo studio di due erbari quattrocenteschi della Biblioteca Universitaria di Padova (mss. 604 e 1969)

The manuscripts 604 and 1969 from the Biblioteca Universitaria di Padova are two illustrated herbals produced in Padova, respectively at the beginning and at the end of the XV century. Both of them still preserve some traces of use that are particularly interesting to investigate. The traces, despite being still visible, don't make immediately clear how these books were produced of how they were used over the course of their lives. This thesis aimed at combining reseach approached from both the humanities and the sciences, based on their common premises and their abitily to produce complementary informations about the same subject. Both methods were applied to answer the questions about the manuscript's biographies focuding on text, images and material informations. The historical-artistic and philological studies allowed to have an in-depth undestranding of the content of the two volumes and to outline the context of the medical practice and the production of illuminated herbals in XV century Padova; the chemical analysis provided new informations about production techniques and on their use. Each of the research methods provided pieces of information and the dialogue between them allowed to reach conclusions not obtainable otherwise: the production techniques and materials used were determined, their use was mapped, and it was possible to determine their role in the context of the medical practice and of botanical studies.

I mss. 604 e 1969 della Biblioteca Universitaria di Padova sono due erbari figurati prodotti in area padovana, rispettivamente all’inizio e alla fine del XV secolo. Di particolare interesse per lo studio di questi manoscritti risultano le tracce del loro utilizzo che, pur visibili, non sembrano offrire con chiarezza indicazioni sulle finalità della produzione di questi volumi, né su come siano stati adoperati nel corso della loro vita. Questo studio si propone di affiancare metodologie di ricerca sia di stampo umanistico che di stampo scientifico, sulla base della capacità di entrambe di fornire informazioni complementari su un medesimo oggetto. Questi due indirizzi di ricerca sono stati applicati per rispondere alle domande sulla biografia dei manoscritti, sviluppandosi in un’indagine tanto sui materiali, quanto su immagini e testi. Gli studi storico-artistici e filologici hanno permesso di comprendere approfonditamente il contenuto di questi due codici e di delineare il contesto della pratica medica e della produzione di erbari manoscritti della Padova del XV secolo; le analisi chimiche, invece, hanno fornito nuove informazioni sulle tecniche produttive e sulle tracce d’uso. Ciascuno di questi indirizzi di ricerca ha prodotto dati e risultati, ma solo tramite il confronto tra questi si sono potute trarre conclusioni che non sarebbe stato possibile raggiungere altrimenti: sono stati determinati i materiali utilizzati nella produzione dei due manoscritti, ne sono stati mappati i pattern di utilizzo e si sono potuti collocare i due volumi all’interno del contesto della pratica medica e dello studio della botanica.
