Fumarsi l'anima frantumata e labirintica: Italo Svevo e Fernando Pessoa

This thesis aims to analyze two of the most significant representatives of European modernism, Italo Svevo and Fernando Pessoa, with the objective of highlighting similarities and differences in their respective literary and philosophical trajectories. The study focuses in particular on key thematic pillars of modernist literature, such as subjectivity, the relationship with psychoanalysis, the representation of illness, vice, and the crisis of individual identity. Through a comparative approach, this research seeks to demonstrate how both authors, despite belonging to different cultural contexts, develop a convergent reflection on the fragmentation of the self and the instability of modern consciousness. From this perspective, the analysis draws on critical tools derived from literary theory and psychoanalytic criticism, with particular reference to the influence of the thought of Sigmund Freud, in order to interpret the inner mechanisms and unconscious dynamics that emerge in the texts. From a methodological standpoint, the study is based on close reading of the main works of the two authors, combined with a comparative investigation aimed at identifying thematic and stylistic parallels and divergences. This is further supported by a historical and cultural framework of European modernism, which serves to contextualize the poetics of Svevo and Pessoa within the social and intellectual transformations between the nineteenth and twentieth centuries. The ultimate aim of this thesis is therefore to demonstrate how, through different expressive modes, both authors contribute to shaping a deeply problematic vision of modern identity, characterized by restlessness, ambivalence, and the continuous redefinition of the self.

La presente tesi di laurea si propone di analizzare due tra i più significativi rappresentanti del modernismo europeo, Italo Svevo e Fernando Pessoa, al fine di mettere in luce analogie e differenze nei rispettivi percorsi letterari e filosofici. L’indagine si concentra in particolare su alcuni nuclei tematici fondamentali della letteratura modernista, quali la soggettività, il rapporto con la psicoanalisi, la rappresentazione della malattia, il vizio e la crisi dell’identità individuale. Attraverso un approccio comparatistico, la ricerca intende evidenziare come entrambi gli autori, pur appartenendo a contesti culturali differenti, sviluppino una riflessione convergente sulla frammentazione dell’io e sull’instabilità della coscienza moderna. In tale prospettiva, l’analisi si avvale di strumenti critici derivati dalla teoria letteraria e dalla critica psicoanalitica, con particolare riferimento all’influenza del pensiero di Sigmund Freud, al fine di interpretare i meccanismi interiori e le dinamiche inconsce che emergono nei testi. Dal punto di vista metodologico, il lavoro si fonda su un’analisi testuale ravvicinata (close reading) delle opere principali dei due autori, affiancata da un’indagine comparativa volta a individuare parallelismi e divergenze tematiche e stilistiche. A ciò si aggiunge un inquadramento storico-culturale del modernismo europeo, utile a contestualizzare le poetiche di Svevo e Pessoa all’interno delle trasformazioni sociali e intellettuali tra XIX e XX secolo. L’obiettivo ultimo della tesi è dunque quello di dimostrare come, attraverso modalità espressive differenti, entrambi gli autori contribuiscano a delineare una visione profondamente problematica dell’identità moderna, segnata da inquietudine, ambivalenza e continua ridefinizione del sé.
