This thesis explores the educational potential of urban space in geography teaching, proposing the Urban Safari as an experiential and inclusive methodology for renewing geography education. The research originates from the awareness of the critical issues that still characterize school geography today, often linked to traditional and content-based teaching models that limit students’ active involvement and reduce the discipline to the mere memorization of information. Starting from the evolution of geography education and the contribution of critical geography and the geography of perception, the study examines the role of direct experience in the construction of geographical knowledge. In particular, it analyzes the concepts of lived space, urban perception, mental maps, and territorial identity, highlighting how the relationship with places influences students’ cognitive, emotional, and relational processes. The thesis also focuses on Outdoor Education applied to urban contexts, considering the city as an open-air educational laboratory capable of fostering observation, participation, and meaningful learning. Within this framework, the Urban Safari is presented as a guided exploration activity based on direct observation, the use of data collection tools, and critical reflection on urban space. The project section proposes a structured educational experience aimed at developing geographical skills, active citizenship, and territorial awareness. Through the analysis of students’ mental maps produced before and after the activity, the research highlights changes in spatial perception and in the ability to interpret and understand the territory. The thesis concludes by emphasizing how geography teaching based on experience, participation, and inclusion can contribute to the development of more aware, critical, and actively engaged citizens, capable of understanding and taking care of the territories in which they live.
