The detailed geology and tectonic history of northern part of the Pale di San Martino Group of the Dolomites (between Mt. Focobon-Passo Valles) is poorly studied in literature. With this work we present a new, 30 km2, 1:10.000 geological map with a new paleogeographic interpretation of the area and a revised structural evolution. The area is characterised by the classical western Dolomites sequence that records an extensional tectonic from the Upper Anisian to the Upper Ladinian. In the area effusive and intrusive products of the Ladinian volcanic event are present, which are imposed on a complex basin-platform paleogeographic setting controlled by a system of normal faults. During the alpine orogeny, the inherited Anisian-Ladinian extensional structures are partially reactivated as ramps, buttresses and lateral ramps/tear faults. The new structures (thrust faults) are controlled by lithological heterogeneities both within the Anisian/Ladinian basin (e.g. Buchenstein Fm. vs. Monzogabbro sills) and between the platform and basin (Massive Sciliar Fm. vs. layered Werfen and Buchenstein Fms.).
La geologia e l’evoluzione tettonica della parte nord del Gruppo delle Pale di San Martino, in Dolomiti, è poco rappresentata in letteratura. Con questo lavoro presentiamo una nuova carta geologica alla scala 1:10.000 (che copre un’area di 30 km2 compresa tra la Val di Gares e il Passo Valles) accompagnata da una nuova interpretazione paleogeografica e modello strutturale aggiornato dell’area tra il Mt. Focobon-Passo Valles. L’area del Focobon è caratterizzata dalla classica sequenza stratigrafica delle Dolomiti Occidentali che registra una fase tettonica estensionale dall’Anisico Superiore fino al Ladinico Superiore. Nell’area sono presenti prodotti effusivi ed intrusivi dell’evento vulcanico Ladinico che si sono imposti su un contesto paleogeografico bacino-piattaforma complesso controllato da un sistema di faglie normali. Durante l’orogenesi Alpina, le strutture estensionali ereditate Anisico-Ladiniche sono parzialmente riattivate come thrust, e con componente obliqua come rampe laterali of tear fault. Le traiettorie delle strutture e i principali livelli di scollamento sono controllati dalle differenze litologiche presenti sia all’interno del bacino Anisico-Ladinico (ed esempio Fm. di Buchenstein vs i sill di monzogabbro) e tra la piattafoma e il bacino (la massiccia Fm. dello Sciliar vs la stratificata Fm. di Buchenstein).
