Natural disturbances are major drivers of forest ecosystem dynamics and are expected to increase under ongoing climate change. In Norway spruce (Picea abies) forests, windstorms often interact with subsequent outbreaks of the European spruce bark beetle (Ips typographus), creating compound disturbance regimes that substantially alter forest structure. Although their ecological consequences have been widely investigated, the effects of these compound disturbances on ground-dwelling spiders have received comparatively little attention. This study investigated the responses of ground-dwelling spiders to forest habitat alterations caused by bark beetle-induced mortality and previous windthrow disturbance caused by the Vaia storm. Ground-dwelling spider communities were compared among undisturbed stands, isolated bark beetle-affected stands, and bark beetle-affected stands located near Vaia windthrow areas. Taxonomic diversity, community composition, indicator species, and functional traits were analysed to evaluate ecological responses to different disturbance regimes. A total of 1,272 individuals belonging to 47 species were collected. Species richness and abundance were significantly higher in bark beetle-affected stands associated with windthrow, whereas isolated bark beetle outbreaks produced only minor changes compared to undisturbed forests. Community composition was shaped by both disturbance regime and elevation. Functional analyses revealed a compositional shift from web builders to highly dispersive and actively hunting species in bark beetle-affected stands near windthrows. Indicator Species Analysis identified Pardosa lugubris and Pardosa riparia as typical species occurring in sites affected by multiple disturbances. In general, the results indicate that the ecological consequences of Ips typographus outbreaks largely depend on the disturbance context in which they occur. Structural changes generated by windthrow at the landscape scale drive the taxonomic and functional reorganisation of ground-dwelling spider communities. These findings highlight the importance of considering compound disturbance regimes when assessing forest biodiversity responses. Furthermore, the highly heterogeneous habitat mosaic under natural disturbances might sustain more taxonomically and functionally diverse communities.

Abstract

These findings highlight the importance of considering compound disturbance regimes when assessing forest biodiversity responses. Furthermore, the highly heterogeneous habitat mosaic under natural disturbances might sustain more taxonomically and functionally diverse communities.
