This thesis analyzes the phenomenon of early sports specialization during childhood and adolescence, focusing on the physical and psychological risks associated with intensive training focused on a single sport. By analyzing the scientific literature, the main issues related to this training model are examined, including overuse injuries, burnout and increased levels of psychological stress in young athletes. This study also highlights the importance of a multidisciplinary approach to physical activity during adolescence, considered crucial for the development of motor, cognitive, and social skills. The research compares the Italian school context with the American one through the administration of a validated questionnaire, assessing the level of sport specialization among middle school students. In particular, the Sport Specialization Scale (Jayanthi et al., 2015) was used to evaluate the degree of sport specialization among young athletes. The questionnaire allows students to be classified into low, moderate, or high levels of specialization based on parameters such as exclusive participation in a single sport, annual training volume and the withdrawal from other sports.
