Background: A sedentary behavior has well-known detrimental effects on health. Nevertheless, an increasing number of occupations are sedentary, particularly those involving prolonged use of video display terminals. To counter this issue, "active seating" with alternative designs is increasingly being proposed. However, scientific literature on the impact of these workstations is limited and presents conflicting results. Study Aim: The purpose of this study was to compare two different office chair designs (a "Moon" kneeling chair, and an ergonomic "Stool") witha a conventional "Standard" chair, a randomized, within-subject crossover design was used to evaluate their impact on subjective comfort and muscular activity. Materials and Methods: Ten healthy participants were recruited and asked to perform a 30 minute computer transcription task while using each type of seat. Discomfort was assessed using the Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) and the Leg Discomfort Questionnaire (LDQ). Surface electromyographic (EMG) activity of the primary trunk muscles was recorded to evaluate mean activity (RMS) and fatigue (median frequency trend, MedF). Additionally, the influence on work performance was evaluated by quantifying cumulative transcription errors (Levenshtein distance). Results: Questionnaire analysis highlighted the superiority of the Standard chair, which provided greater overall comfort and a reduced sensation of stiffness. Conversely, the Moon seat caused marked discomfort in the lower limbs (hips, knees, and feet). EMG data indicated a tendency for active seating options to require greater activation of the trunk muscles. Transcription accuracy did not show significant variations across conditions or over time. Conclusions: Although conventional chairs provide the necessary comfort for prolonged sessions, active seating options may be effective in engaging core muscles, although at the cost of greater discomfort. Since the use of alternative seating does not compromise productivity, the optimal ergonomic solution would be to alternate between chairs throughout the workday.
Premesse: La sedentarietà ha effetti deleteri ben noti sulla salute. Ciononostante, un numero sempre maggiore di occupazioni risulta essere sedentario, in particolare i lavori che prevedono l'uso prolungato del videoterminale. Per contrastare questa tendenza vengono proposte sempre più spesso "sedute attive" dal design alternativo. Tuttavia, la letteratura scientifica è limitata e presenta risultati discordanti in merito all’impatto di queste postazioni. Scopo dello studio: L'obiettivo del presente studio è stato confrontare due differenti design di sedie da ufficio (una kneeling chair "Moon" e uno sgabello ergonomico "Stool”) con una seduta convenzionale "Control", attraverso uno studio randomizzato crossover within-subject, valutandone l'impatto sul comfort soggettivo e l’attività muscolare. Materiali e metodi: Sono stati reclutati 10 giovani adulti sani, ai quali è stato richiesto di eseguire un compito di trascrizione al videoterminale della durata di 30 minuti per ciascuna seduta. Il discomfort è stato valutato mediante la somministrazione dei questionari Nordic Musculoskeletal Questionnaire (NMQ) e Leg Discomfort Questionnaire (LDQ). È stata registrata l'attività elettromiografica di superficie (EMG) dei principali muscoli del tronco per stimarne l'attivazione media (RMS) e l'affaticamento (andamento della frequenza mediana, MedF). In aggiunta è stata valutata l’influenza sulla prestazione lavorativa quantificando gli errori cumulativi di trascrizione (distanza di Levenshtein). Risultati: L'analisi dei questionari ha evidenziato una preferenza significativa per la sedia Standard, che ha garantito un maggiore comfort generale e una minore sensazione di rigidità. Al contrario, la seduta Moon ha generato un discomfort marcato agli arti inferiori (anche, ginocchia e piedi). I dati EMG hanno mostrato una tendenza delle sedute attive a richiedere una maggiore attivazione di base dei muscoli del tronco. L'accuratezza della trascrizione non ha subito variazioni significative tra le condizioni o nel corso del tempo. Conclusioni: Sebbene, la sedia convenzionale garantisca il comfort necessario per sessioni prolungate, le sedute attive potrebbero essere efficaci nello stimolare la muscolatura del core, pur a fronte di un maggiore disagio. Poiché l'uso delle sedute alternative non inficia la produttività, una soluzione ergonomica risiederebbe in un turnover delle sedie durante la giornata lavorativa.
