Identité et espace dans L’Eden à l’aube de Karim Kattan: formes de désorientation et réorientation

L’Eden à l’aube, a novel by Karim Kattan published in 2024 by Elyzard Editions, unfolds the love story between two young Palestinian men, Isaac and Gabriel, and the ways it is shaped by the geographical context in which it takes place. The aim of this thesis is to analyse the tie between disorientation, queer desire and space developed throughout the narration. Starting from a preface on the impossibility of reaching a thorough comprehension of the nature of identity, the first part of this study develops an analysis on the different forms of disorientations experienced by the characters as a result of the Israeli colonisation and, specifically, on the impact of the occupation on the experience of desire. Symmetrically, the second part wishes to examine the different forms of reorientations that the characters put into place in the effort of finding a new existential alignment through a reappropriation of the body and of space and, at the same time, by means of a replacement of their reference geographical coordinates. Through a postcolonial approach which integrates Sara Ahmed’s perspective of the desalination of queer identities, discussed in her essay Queer Phenomenology, this study will investigate the way in which the problematic relation between identity and space translates into an experience of disorientation which can result in a redefinition of the self.

L’Eden à l’aube, roman de Karim Kattan publié en 2024 aux Éditions Elyzad, déploie l’histoire d’amour entre Isaac et Gabriel, deux jeunes hommes palestiniens, façonnée par le contexte géographique où elle se déroule. Le but de ce mémoire est celui de remarquer le lien établi dans la narration entre désorientation, désir queer et espace. À partir d’une préface sur la nature inconnaissable de l’identité, la première partie de cette étude développe une réflexion autour des différentes formes de désorientation vécues par les personnages en raison de la colonisation israélienne et, en particulier, de l’impact de l’occupation sur l’expérience du désir. La deuxième partie vise, symétriquement, à examiner les différentes formes de réorientation mises en place par les protagonistes dans l’effort de trouver un nouvel alignement existentiel à travers une réappropriation du corps et de l’espace et, en même temps, par une substitution des coordonnées géographiques de référence. À travers une approche postcoloniale qui intègre la perspective sur le désalignement des identités queer exemplifiée par Sara Ahmed dans son essai Queer Phenomenology, on observe la façon dont le rapport problématique entre identité et espace se traduit dans l’expérience d’une désorientation qui peut, à son tour, être à l’origine d’une nouvelle redéfinition de soi.
