Georg Büchner zwischen Wissenschaft, Literatur und dem Unbewussten: "Lenz" und "Woyzeck" in psychoanalytischer und diskurstheoretischer Perspektive

This thesis examines Georg Büchner's Lenz and Woyzeck from an interdisciplinary perspective that combines philosophical materialism, medical anthropology, and psychoanalytic theory. Its central thesis is that Büchner, as a writer of the Vormärz period, anticipates key insights of literary and psychological modernity: the destabilization of the subject, the body as a site of social violence, and linguistic fragmentation as an expression of inner crisis. The analysis begins by situating Büchner's materialist worldview within his scientific training and political engagement. Building on this, it reconstructs the theoretical foundations of Freudian psychoanalysis and its literary precursors; drawing on Francesco Orlando and Jacques Lacan, two methodological approaches are established for the subsequent textual analysis. At the analytical core of the thesis is an investigation of how madness in Lenz and Woyzeck is not merely represented thematically but produced formally — through syntax, narrative perspective, and the language of perception; this section also incorporates the historical Woyzeck case and Foucault's discourse on power. The thesis concludes by situating Büchner at the intersection of Romanticism and modernity, particularly through comparison with E.T.A. Hoffmann and Franz Kafka. The thesis concludes that literature and psychoanalysis represent complementary modes of knowledge production: the former renders the unconscious experientially accessible, while the latter systematizes it analytically.

Die vorliegende Arbeit untersucht Georg Büchners Lenz und Woyzeck aus einer interdisziplinären Perspektive, die philosophischen Materialismus, medizinische Anthropologie und psychoanalytische Theorie miteinander verknüpft. Ausgangsthese ist, dass Büchner als Autor des Vormärz zentrale Erkenntnisse der literarischen und psychologischen Moderne vorwegnimmt: die Destabilisierung des Subjekts, den Körper als Ort sozialer Gewalt und die sprachliche Fragmentierung als Ausdruck innerer Krisen. Zunächst wird Büchners materialistisches Weltbild in seiner naturwissenschaftlichen Ausbildung und seinem politischen Engagement verortet. Darauf aufbauend werden die theoretischen Grundlagen der Freudschen Psychoanalyse sowie ihre literarischen Vorläufer rekonstruiert; mit Francesco Orlando und Jacques Lacan werden zwei methodische Zugänge für die anschließende Textanalyse bereitgestellt. Im analytischen Zentrum der Arbeit steht die Untersuchung, wie Wahnsinn in Lenz und Woyzeck nicht nur thematisch dargestellt, sondern formal – durch Syntax, Erzählperspektive und Wahrnehmungssprache – erzeugt wird; einbezogen werden dabei auch der historische Fall Woyzeck sowie Foucaults Machtdiskurs. Abschließend wird Büchner im Spannungsfeld zwischen Romantik und Moderne situiert, insbesondere im Vergleich mit E.T.A. Hoffmann und Franz Kafka. Die Arbeit gelangt zu dem Schluss, dass Literatur und Psychoanalyse komplementäre Erkenntnisformen darstellen, die das Unbewusste einerseits erfahrbar machen, andererseits systematisieren.
