L'integrazione come investimento sociale: gli studenti con background migratorio nelle scuole italiane

The demographic decline in Europe and the aftermath of the 2015 Syrian Refugee Crisis have intensified debates around the topic of immigration in public discourse. Particularly, by questioning the possibilities of integration and what it means for immigrants to integrate into host societies. Schools are considered to be one of the main institutional entry points for the integration of immigrants into host societies. This is because of education’s close association with future employability. This interdisciplinary thesis uses a mixed-methodology to analyse the topic of integration through education from an Aspirations-Capabilities point of view in the case of Italy. The mixed-methods of research include analysing the demographic data of schools in Italy and semi-structured interviews with teachers who are active in this sector. The thesis argues that schools play a crucial role in structuring integration by transmitting social norms in a diverse context, thereby shaping how integration is defined and experienced.
