Since the 1980s, the issue of industrial heritage, particularly urban wastelands, has become a topical issue. With urbanization in full swing in almost every city of the world and urban sustainability advocated by the UN 2030 agenda, brownfield sites become a lever for urban revitalization and strengthening of the principle of sustainable development. Brazzaville, the Congolese capital, is not left out of this process global. This city, founded in 1880, has experienced urban growth and spatial expansion considerable. Thus, it must find ways to become more economical in terms land development. The recovery/rehabilitation of vacant spaces including the brownfield site the former Sotexco factory where the initial activity had ceased, represents a growing interest to satisfy the needs of urban renewal. Abstract

This thesis focuses on the implications of the restoration and development of wasteland industrial site of the former Sotexco factory in Brazzaville. He is particularly interested in the transformations that this process induces on environmental, social, economic and heritage sustainability. By cross-referencing field data and archival sources, the study will shed light on the history of the company and will highlight the value and potential of the site before show that the restoration of said wasteland can be a sustainable alternative.

ustainability in the redevelopment of industrial heritage: the case of the former SOTEXCO factory site in Brazzaville (Republic of Congo, 1965 to the present day)
