Electricity price forecasting is mostly limited to point forecasts, which do not quantify the uncertainty surrounding them. This thesis proposes a two-stage approach to the probabilistic forecasting of Italian zonal prices. The first stage estimates the central value with a regularized linear model and a deep neural network, while the second builds the predictive distribution around it through a sequence of methods of increasing complexity, from empirical quantiles to heavy-tailed distributional families and on to conformal prediction with its normalized and adaptive variants. The analysis covers the North, South and Sicily zones, chosen for their different structural features. The conformal layer mainly improves hour-by-hour reliability, which purely distributional methods achieve for only part of the day. The gain arises from adapting the interval to the asymmetry of the errors and to local volatility, and concerns calibration rather than width.

Abstract
The gain arises from adapting the interval to the asymmetry of the errors and to local volatility, and concerns calibration rather than width.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
