The study of innovation diffusion models represents a central theme in economics, sociology, and management, as it enables not only the reconstruction of historical adoption patterns but also the understanding of the mechanisms driving demand growth and the formulation of reliable forecasts for the life cycle of products and technologies. In this framework, the Bass model stands out as one of the most established approaches, owing to its ability to combine analytical simplicity with empirical fit. This work focuses on the Bass model and its main extensions, such as the generalized Bass model (GBM), which introduces exogenous shocks in the adoption intensity, and the Guseo-Guidolin model (GGM), which treats market potential as a dynamic function of time. For each of these models, parameter estimation is carried out via maximum likelihood, analytically deriving the expressions for the log-likelihood, its gradient, and the expected information matrix—essential tools for assessing parameter identifiability. Through a simulation study, we evaluate how the parameter identification capability varies as a function of two key factors: the increasing complexity of the model and the length of the observed time horizon.

Abstract
Through a simulation study, we evaluate how the parameter identification capability varies as a function of two key factors: the increasing complexity of the model and the length of the observed time horizon.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
