R-515B Solstice® N15 is a non-flammable refrigerant; it has zero ozone depletion potential, a GWP of 298 CO₂ eq., and shares very similar characteristics as R-134A. It is therefore ideal as a replacement for R-134A in medium-temperature applications in commercial refrigeration and in high-temperature applications in cooling systems. To address the gap in the literature regarding the use of new low-GWP refrigerants, such as R-515B, and given its excellent thermophysical properties, we decided to study its evaporation within a small, commercially available copper tube of 30 centimetres with a inner diameter of 4.5 millimetres, electrically heated. The tube was chemically etched using an HCl-based solution by immersion for 24 hours, in order to increase surface roughness and create sites to allow bubble formation for nucleate boiling. It was then integrated, via appropriate soldering and bonding, into the system housed in the Laboratory of Heat Transfer in Micro-Geometries (LABHEATMG) of the Department of Industrial Engineering at the University of Padua. Finally, a comparison between the etched tube and a smooth tube was proposed, by estimating the heat transfer coefficient of the smooth tube with the same inner diameter under the same working conditions with a correlation available in the literature.
