The aim of my thesis is to pose a translation proposal of the novel "Faserland" by Chiristian Kracht and to write a critique of it. The novel was written in 1995 and is considered the first work of the Pop III, the third period of the pop literature genre, which was born in the sixties in the United States and then spread all over Europe. The masterpiece is a traveling novel: precisely, the nameless protagonist travels across Germany from the North to the South and then arrives in Switzerland, land which has a salvific function in the novel. The novel can be read as a critique to the capitalistic and consumeristic society the protagonist lives in: in fact, the protagonist spends money, goes to parties, squanders food and uses every type of means of transportation. The protagonist sees Germany as a big capitalistic machine from which the wants to run away, that is why he decides to move to Switzerland, land where he tries to change his old habits. In particular, the main themes through which the capitalistic thematic is investigated are those of the food, of the smoking and of the protagonist’s sexuality. In conclusion, even if it t displays many differences with the pop novels which first appeared, "Faserland" can be considered a pop novel, a modern one.
Fine della mia tesi è quello di stilare una proposta di traduzione del romanzo "Faserland" di Christian Kracht e di fornirne una lettura critica. Tale romanzo è stato scritto nel 1995 ed è considerato il romanzo di apertura del terzo filone della letteratura pop, genere nato negli Stati Uniti negli anni Sessanta e poi diffusosi in Europa. Per la precisione, "Faserland" è un romanzo di viaggio: il protagonista dall’identità misteriosa attraversa la Germania da nord a sud fino a giungere in Svizzera, terra che, all’interno del romanzo, svolge una funzione salvifica. Il romanzo può essere letto come critica alla società consumistica e capitalistica in cui il protagonista è immerso: infatti, egli sperpera cibo e denaro, va alle feste e si muove utilizzando qualsiasi mezzo di trasporto. Considera, però, la Germania come una grande macchina capitalistica da cui scappare, per questo opta per l’esilio volontario in Svizzera. In particolare, le tematiche attraverso cui è indagato il tema del capitalismo nel romanzo sono quelle del cibo, del fumo e della sessualità. In conclusione, nonostante la sua modernità – possono, infatti, essere ritrovate molte differenze con i romanzi pop pubblicati a inizio anni Sessanta, "Faserland" può essere considerato un romanzo pop a tutti gli effetti.
