This Master's thesis focuses on the analysis and design of an automated system for opening and closing refrigerated display cabinet doors during performance tests. The proposed system supports the evaluation of energy efficiency and thermal performance, as described in the BS EN ISO 23953 standard, which imposes a series of rigorous and repeated door operating cycles. It must ensure compliance with prescribed parameters such as opening frequencies, operating times, and opening angles, without modifying the functionality of the cabinets and without damaging their structure. The main objective is to develop a solution characterized by high universality and automation. The proposed system is designed to adapt to the different configurations of refrigerated display cabinets, such as vertical cabinets with hinged or sliding doors and horizontal cabinets. A key aspect of the proposed system is that, for the different configurations of refrigerated display cabinets, no invasive mechanical modifications will be required, so the structure will remain almost unchanged. This approach aims to reduce setup time and minimize manual adjustments. Such adaptability is particularly important because, as will be discussed, each refrigerated cabinet has doors with different characteristics in terms of mass, inertia, friction, damping systems, and closing behavior. To assess the feasibility of the proposed automation concept, different technological architectures are considered and compared with respect to the main functional, mechanical, and control requirements of the application. In addition to the mechanical design and actuator selection, this thesis analyzes the control logic and the integration of diagnostic functions. These features enable real-time monitoring of system performance and allow identification of anomalies such as failed gripping operations, abnormal torque variations, or unexpected power absorption patterns, improving both the reliability and repeatability of the testing process. The work was carried out at CAREL Industries S.p.A., where several measurements and tests were performed on refrigerated display cabinets available within the company facilities. The final goal is to provide an industrially scalable solution that improves test efficiency, reduces operator intervention and supports compliance with regulatory testing standards.
