Linguistic variation constitutes an intrinsic characteristic of every language and, in the case of the Spanish language, it is particularly evident and significant due to its wide geographical distribution and the large number of speakers. This thesis aims, first of all, to analyse the phenomenon of linguistic variation from a theoretical perspective, examining its definition and the different types of variation, with particular attention to diatopic, or geographical, variation. Subsequently, the analysis will focus on the specific case of the Spanish language, examining its worldwide distribution and the historical process that determined its expansion. From this perspective, particular attention will be devoted to the Spanish-speaking linguistic landscape of Latin America and to the main geographical varieties of Spanish. The concept of linguistic variation is closely connected to that of the linguistic standard, since variation includes all those language uses that diverge from the standard norm. For this reason, the thesis will examine the concept of the standard, the processes of language standardisation, the role of the linguistic institutions that promote it, and the social and cultural prestige it enjoys. This reflection gives rise to a central question: is it possible to speak of the actual existence of a linguistic standard? And, above all, can the Spanish that is heard, learned, and perceived globally today really be defined as standard Spanish? In fact, one of the varieties of Spanish that is currently most visible on the international stage is Puerto Rican Spanish, largely thanks to the success of Bad Bunny, a Puerto Rican artist at the top of the global music charts. Bad Bunny is an important artist and promoter of the Spanish language and of Puerto Rican and Caribbean culture. Through his artistic and musical production, Puerto Rico and its linguistic variety have gained unprecedented visibility, demonstrating how language and linguistic variation can become instruments of social and cultural identification, as well as of political revendication. The final part of the thesis will be devoted to the analysis of the Puerto Rican linguistic variety through the lyrics of Bad Bunny's songs. The main phonetic and phonological, morphosyntactic, and lexical characteristics that distinguish Puerto Rican Spanish will be examined.
