This thesis examines how the lack of data and the life experiences of migrants challenge the traditional portrayal of Morocco as a transit country for migrants from sub-Saharan countries. The thesis addresses the problem that available statistics and official classifications often provide an incomplete picture of migrants’ presence, migration routes, waiting periods, settlement, and cases of non-migration in Morocco. Using a qualitative approach based on a literature review, policy analysis, and semi-structured interviews, the study investigates how migration is described in academic and institutional discourse and how migrants themselves describe their experiences. The thesis focuses on the gap between policy-driven classifications such as “transit” and the more complex reality of people whose journeys may involve prolonged stays, changes in legal status, movement restrictions, and uncertain plans. By connecting migration management to lived experiences, the study argues that Morocco should be understood not only as a transit route to Europe but also as a complex migratory context where mobility, immobility, and settlement intersect. The study contributes to ongoing debates on categories of migration, data reliability, and Euro-Mediterranean migration management.

Abstract
The study contributes to ongoing debates on categories of migration, data reliability, and Euro-Mediterranean migration management.| File | Dimensione | Formato | |
