Introduction: An individual's psychological functioning depends on the interaction between cognitive, emotional, and motivational factors, and the emotional dimension is central to both physiological aging and cognitive decline. Despite this, this dimension remains understudied in older adults. A reliable instrument for assessing emotional responses is the International Affective Picture System (IAPS; Lang et al., 1997), but studies conducted on older populations are scarce, and even fewer have involved the Italian population (Branco et al., 2023). Aim: This study aims to provide a preliminary validation of the IAPS in the Italian population aged 65 and over, providing normative data that allow for a more accurate assessment of emotional processes in this age group. Hypothesis: Based on the international literature (Backs et al., 2005; Gong and Wang, 2016; Grühn and Scheibe, 2008; Pôrto et al., 2011), it is hypothesized that the responses of the Italian sample will not differ significantly from those reported in the literature, and that cognitive performance and emotional processing are relatively independent. Method: 229 participants aged 65 and over (135 women, 94 men), with no neurological or psychiatric conditions, were initially administered two paper-based questionnaires and a neuropsychological screening test, aimed at identifying potential participants to be excluded (Fear Survey Schedule – Short Form, an anamnestic form, Montreal Cognitive Assessment - MoCA). Participants were subsequently asked to view 60 IAPS images and to rate their emotional response based on valence and arousal using the Self-Assessment Manikin (SAM; Bradley and Lang, 1994). Results: The valence-arousal relationship was predominantly linear and negative (r = -0.86), consistent with the pattern typically observed in older adults. Rating consistency was high for valence but systematically distorted for arousal, with an overestimation of activation for negative stimuli. The MoCA did not emerge as a robust predictor of the consistency of emotional ratings. Discussion: The results indicate a selective reorganization, rather than a generic reduction, of affective sensitivity in older age, substantially independent of cognitive functioning. The study provides the first Italian normative data for the IAPS in an over-65 population, with implications for future affective-motivational neuropsychological assessment.
