SPES is a nuclear physics facility under construction at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, and it's going to play an important role in the research about the exotic neutron-rich isotopes. The main idea behind the contruction is the usage of protons at intermediate energy (40 MeV) to induce fissions in a UCx target designed to produce 10^13 fissions per second, as required by new generation facilities. This thesis provides a benchmark for the Monte Carlo particle transport tool FLUKA on the target and the facility elements, and good results are obtained.

Abstract

SPES is a nuclear physics facility under construction at Laboratori Nazionali di Legnaro, and it's going to play an important role in the research about the exotic neutron-rich isotopes. The main idea behind the contruction is the usage of protons at intermediate energy (40 MeV) to induce fissions in a UCx target designed to produce 10^13 fissions per second, as required by new generation facilities. This thesis provides a benchmark for the Monte Carlo particle transport tool FLUKA on the target and the facility elements, and good results are obtained.
