Two Noble Kinsmen: Shakespeare’s tragicomic re-reading of The Knight’s Tale

How can two works that share the same plot and characters diverge so much on the grounds of literary genre? How can one be a tragicomedy and the other a romance? With this thesis I intend on analyse this issue. The Two Noble Kinsmen, a tragicomedy that William Shakespeare and John Fletcher composed in the XVII century, has not been greatly explored by scholars in the past, at least not as much as other plays by Shakespeare have, but most of the debate around it seem to agree on one specific aspect of its genre, that is, the play is much more tragic than its medieval counterpart, Chaucer’s “The Knight’s Tale.” Once having explored the genre of The Two Noble Kinsmen and having analysed the reasons that make it a tragicomedy and not a mere tragedy or a mere comedy, I will analyse Chaucer’s tale on the grounds of its literary genre and its themes. Indeed, “The Knight’s Tale” is a highly nuanced tale, a romance rooted in philosophic discourse with a seemingly tragic ending that the author moulded into a moment of reflection over one’s human condition. Even though the two works share the same content and follow similar storylines, what makes them different is the attitude they share regarding their themes. In the last part of this thesis, I will explore the reasons why The Two Noble Kinsmen, which is rooted in a chaotic vision of the world, where men are not privy to the inner workings of their own fate, nor they pretend to do so, diverges to much from the “The Knight’s Tale,” which provides the reader with the philosophical, and oftentimes satirical, means to gauge its thematic intent.

Come possono due opere che condividono la medesima trama, temi e personaggi divergere così tanto sul piano del genere letterario da risultare una un romance e l’altra una tragicommedia? Con il presente elaborato intendo analizzare esattamente questo. The Two Noble Kinsmen, tragicommedia del XVII secolo composta da William Shakespeare e John Fletcher, non è stata certo al centro di altrettanti dibattiti letterari come la maggior parte delle opere nel canone Shakespeariano, ma, ciononostante, gran parte degli studi dedicata a essa paiono concordare su un unico aspetto: l’opera presenta un carattere nettamente più tragico rispetto alla sua fonte letteraria, “The Knight’s Tale” di Chaucer. Una volta presentata The Two Noble Kinsmen, e una volta averne introdotto le motivazioni che la rendono una tragicommedia piuttosto che una sola tragedia o una sola commedia, nel presente elaborato intendo analizzare il racconto di Chaucer sul piano del genere testuale e delle tematiche da esso trattate. “The Knight’s Tale” è un racconto dalle mille sfaccettature, un romance di carattere profondamente filosofico con un finale pseudo-tragico che l’autore è in grado di tramutare in un momento di raccoglimento, di meditazione sulla condizione umana. Nonostante le due opere divergano raramente sul piano contenutistico e narrativo, divergono fortemente su quello tematico. Difatti, nell’ultima parte dell’elaborato, intendo analizzare le motivazioni per cui “The Knight’s Tale,” il quale fornisce al lettore una chiave filosofica, e velatamente satirica, che possa aiutarlo a interpretarne l’obiettivo, differisce così nettamente da The Two Noble Kinsmen che, essendo dominata da un senso di chaos e di arrendevolezza nei confronti di un destino che non si lascia domare, non realizza nulla di tutto ciò.
