Background: Grouping strategies are methods that can classify patients according to their degree of dependency. Such methods can be useful for organizations to provide information about patient types, staffing and skill needs, and costs in each setting. Aim: The aim of this thesis study is to explore the existence of groups of hospitalized individuals who have the same degree of dependency on nursing care. Methods: The modalities of the ASGO scale were combined with a clustering algorithm in order to identify similar groups in terms of care needs. A sample of 476 subjects from the department of General Medicine of the University of Padua Hospital was created. The clusters were validated with replication methods in terms of desired properties. Results: The clustering methodology produced 5 groups. The groups are made up of subjects with the same characteristics and therefore consistent with the index of functionality produced by the ASGO scale1. Discussion and Conclusion: The developed method was able to stratify hospitalised subjects. From the thesis study there is a need to expand the research in order to identify new knowledge in the field of nursing care
