Multilingualism and cross-border cooperation: exploring the linguistic landscape in the Greater Region

The aim of this dissertation is to explore the linguistic landscape of the Greater Region, a cross-border area in Europe that gathers together four member states of the European Union, i.e., Luxembourg, France, Germany, and Belgium. The Greater Region is a space where cross-border cooperation among its four member states takes place. The official languages are German, French and Luxembourgish. This study examines four cities as parts of the Greater Region (one for each member state) in order to investigate the linguistic landscape of this cross-border region. The linguistic landscape approach focuses on the signs that are to be found in the public space of these cities and the languages displayed on these signs. This research will provide information on the languages that are part of the linguistic landscape of the Greater Region and their functions. The first chapter presents the relevant literature of the field, while the second chapter describes the territory of the Greater Region. The third chapter investigates public signs found in the four cities analysed in this research, which are Arlon in Belgium, Luxembourg city in Luxembourg, Trier in Germany and Metz in France.

Il presente lavoro di tesi si propone di analizzare il paesaggio linguistico (Linguistic Landscape) della Grande Regione, più comunemente conosciuta con il nome francese di Grande Région o con quello tedesco di Großregion. La Grande Regione è uno spazio di cooperazione internazionale e interregionale che unisce quattro stati membri dell’Unione Europea, ovvero Francia, Germania, Belgio e Lussemburgo. Le lingue della Grande Regione sono francese, tedesco e lussemburghese. L’obiettivo di questo lavoro è esplorare il paesaggio linguistico di quattro città che sono parte del territorio della Grande Regione, prendendo in esame una città per ogni stato membro della Grande Regione. La ricerca segue l’approccio del Linguistic Landscape, che si focalizza sullo studio delle lingue nello spazio pubblico, prendendo in considerazione i segnali linguistici che stanno intorno a noi, come ad esempio i segnali stradali, i cartelli appesi nelle vetrine dei negozi o tutti quei segnali che possiamo incontrare nello spazio che ci circonda. Partendo dalla segnaletica presente nello spazio delle quattro città prese in esame verranno fatte delle considerazioni su quali lingue sono presenti nel paesaggio multiculturale della Grande Regione e quale funzione ricoprono. Il primo capitolo si focalizza sulla letteratura e le teorie più importanti nell’ambito del Linguistic Landscape. Il secondo capitolo descrive la Grande Regione con l’obiettivo di contestualizzare la ricerca presentata nel terzo capitolo, nel quale viene analizzato il panorama linguistico delle quattro città prese in analisi, che sono Arlon in Belgio, la città di Lussemburgo in Lussemburgo, Trier in Germania e Metz in Francia.
